Please visit CDC here on the proper use of homemade masks here:
2 pieces 100% cotton fabric: 6" x 9" (You can also cut up old 100% cotton t-shirts!)
1 piece cotton flannel for the lining OR 100% COTTON FABRIC: 6" x 9"
2 elastic strips: 1/8" x 6” women, 7” men, 5.5” children
7" x 9" - adult male
6" x 9" - adult female
5" x 7" - child size, make elastic 5.5" long.
OUT OF ELASTIC? Use ribbon or fabric ties 18”-20” in length.
See my video on how to make a mask with fabric ties here:
OPTIONAL: To make the nose are a fit better you can sew a wire ribbon, pipe cleaner, or baggie tie to the lining piece before sewing all three layers together. :)
*** Masks are re-usable, but must be sanitized before/after each use! Machine wash warm and tumble dry low. ***
* Use tightly woven cotton fabric, or hospital grade material.
* Keep in mind men and women will be wearing the masks when choosing fabric for mask that will be donated.
* Contact local health facilities to see if they are in need of donations.

Currently, the supply of surgical masks is at a critical all-time low throughout the entire nation. As a community of sewists, this is a great way we can band together and make a huge difference in this time of need!
In addition to helping medical staff during critical shortages, these masks can be used at home as well. While wearing homemade face masks will not prevent against catching a respiratory illness, they can help reduce the spread of large particles when someone sneezes or coughs.

I used a rectangle cut from a high quality vacuum bag added to the inside of the cloth for more protection. I also added a strip of foil folded several times for the area that covers the nose so it would be form fitting.

I don't see any tutorials mentioning a nose piece, but it's easy to make it mimic medical masks with this nose fitting, which is important to seal air flow. It needs to conform over the bridge of the nose, and bend toward cheeks. Just add a twist-tie (a firm one is best, or fold together a section of flimsy ones)- simply place it under the top fold. Can use a glue gun to secure it,, but it may not be necessary if your fabric is folded tight. Be well all!

Thank you so much for this clear and concise video. It took me a day, but I completed one of your amazing masks. I finally completed one, it took me most of today, but with the help of my old sewing skills and even older sewing machine, I think I have it ! {Sure wish I had a sharper rotary blade, I did mention I hadn't sewn in awhile?} Getting ready to make more tomorrow and send them off to my pharmacist daughter and her team in Minneapolis

Hi Erica! Thank you for making this video. At 37 I am teaching myself how to sew to help the frontline workers and my family during this Pandemic. Hospitals near us have suggested making DIY mask with an insert for a filter. Some are placing a coffee filter even believe it or not panty liners (removing the paper and using the sticky side) adhering it to the inside of the mask. My question how do I include an opening for a filter? I have a fun patterns for the front and back along with cotton flannel for the middle section. Thank you for taking the time to help the rest of us who are new and trying to help anyway possible. Stay safe and God bless.

Cotton is not recommended as a fabric to use because it main appeal as a clothing material is it's 'beathabilty'. Has been proven might only provide 20-50% protection. Recommend using blue shop towels in homemade face masks which can filter particles 2x to 3x better than cotton!! The two brands they tested were ToolBox's shop towel and ZEP's industrial blue towel.

I made myself one today and followed the cutting requirements for the child size for my daughter. It was way too small. It didn’t even fit my 4 year old. Just an FYI for anyone wanting to make a kid sized ones.

Hey, Erica. I made a cardboard template to cut out my pieces of material and I use to clips instead of pins. So much easier! Do you have a tutorial or can you advise a better way of cutting out the fabric. I'm finding my way a bit slow. Thanks My neighbors jumped at getting some of my masks as they had none. I'm starting with them first. The local hospitals are good on supplies but told me they won't turn them down, especially from an old guy!

I don't know how you manage to do it in 5 to 10 minutes, it takes me at least 20 to 30! Maybe I'm being too much of a perfectionist! Oh, I see, you have only two folds instead of three on the sides. That probably helps!

I want to make these for my household. I want to use clean clothes that I was going to donate to a thrift store. Can I use material that is not 100% cotton. For example 99% cotton & 1% spandex (old pair of jeans) or other variations of higher % of cotton but not 100% cotton? I appreciate the advice, thanks.

I have made 20 of these in the past two days. I watched many videos first and kept coming back to this one, by far the easiest to follow. I've done adult size, 2 kids sizes and made a template for a 10 month old. Some I am sending off to Oregon and NYC where I have family the rest are going to family here in Houston. I would be happy to make more for donations as well.

So how do you put these on? Does the elastic loop around the ears? If so, that doesn’t seem it would hold very well. I would think the straps should go across the mask instead of down the sides

PSA: wearing non n95 masks does nothing if youre not sick infact if your not sick they trap unclean air closer to your face making it easier for you to get sick if youre not already sick this will help nothing it will only increse your risk of infection my aunt whos a nurse in new york as said dozens of people who probs wouldve been ok are now infected because traped air stays there doctors wear this because of hyper sensitivity also making these out of germ filled bandanas is a death sentence please be safe guys
