The Netherlands Is Letting People Get Sick to Beat Coronavirus
As most of the world practices social distancing, the Dutch are trying a different strategy to protect the vulnerable from the coronavirus: They’re aiming for so-called “herd immunity,” or what happens when enough people have survived the illness to effectively slow its spread.
“As we wait for a vaccine or medicine, we can slow down the virus spreading and at the same time build up herd immunity in a controlled manner,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said last week during an update on COVID-19, the contagious respiratory illness caused by the coronvirus.
Like a lot of other world leaders, Rutte is now in the business of calming his citizens down. But he’s also a pragmatist.
“The reality is also that in the coming period a large part of the population will be infected with the virus," he added.
So unlike the Italians or the French, the Dutch are not on lockdown. Schools and restaurants have been told to close, but strict social distancing hasn’t been imposed. People are still hanging out in parks. Even the coffee shops that sell weed are open, though now only for to-go orders.
The owner of one coffee shop in Tilburg, who goes by his nickname Meuk, told VICE News that in times like these, establishments like his are vital because they help people keep calm. But Meuk is still taking precautions.

This is stupid and misleading information. I am dutch and I can tell you these images are not from the last couple of weeks. We are in partial lockdown. Groups of more than 3 are prohibited. Parks are empty and people stay at home as much as possible. Yes, our PM wants group immunity but still keeping social distance so we can protect the elder and vulnerable people. It's a long shot, our government and PM are not perfect.we all know that, but we're still better off than having Donald Trump for a leader.....

Primary health care I.e. gps in the Netherlands are hopeless. They recommend paracetamol for almost all ailments and they do all they can to deter you from seeking advice from a specialist. The Dutch love to save money and it should be noted that when compared to Belgium or Germany, their death rate for cancer patients is much higher.

    • Edwin Suijkerbuijk
      Edwin Suijkerbuijk

Here in the Netherlands you only get tested if you have symptoms that are so bad that you have to visit a hospital so those 20.000 are only the people that had symptoms that where so bad that they visited a hospital. Some larger scale testing has been done in communities where we know the virus has caused some of these serious cases and this shows that 80% of cases tend to be mild and never went to hospital and got tested, so where not counted in the 20.000 number of positive tests. If the 20.000 positive tests are severe cases and 80% of cases is mild the more realistic number is that we are around the 100.000 cases now with 2000 deaths. meaning a 2% death rate among infected people considerably lower then the 3.4 % death rate estimated by the WHO

  • Keith Tolk
    Keith Tolk

I am reading a lot of people making their own conclusions. I am living in the Netherlands and think I could explain better. The idea of this herd immunity is, yes to have 60% of people to get the virus. They are aiming especially at younger, supposedly fit people. You will never know for sure how resilient you are until you get it, but trying to protect the ones that are weaker for sure. By trying to have people distancing themselves, the virus should spread slower than when everyone would just go on with life as usual. By doing this, hospitals can manage the number of dangerous cases and slightly control it. This way less people should die from the virus.

Sight, and again misleading information. No were not letting people get sick. As in many countries we have our fair share of stupidity. That does not mean we want to infect intentionally. The ICU capacity in the netherlands is one of the lowest of the most richest countries. That is why we need social distancing, to slow the spread of the disease. But than again we cant expect much from american media as they are so extremely bad compared to european counterparts.

Another country's mistake "let's see what happens" we do eventually have to get to normal life, but forget economics and politics. Their model is similar to Canada, but the aim is to not make everyone immune, the aim is to decrease Canadian deaths, innocent lives that's aren't ready. This model helps keep the strain on the health care down and treat people that are showing heavy symptoms - get them quarantined + also isolate all people that have the general symptoms and or have traveled domestically or internationally. There's a huge chance a second wave of a stronger virus, I really don't know increasing more people (%'s) to be out there, just keep it essential and mitigate lives to survive! Where the Netherlands #'s are approaching now?.. You're due to change you model NOW and drastically because it going to start showing in the deaths and a surge in cases. It only works so long until it becomes overwhelming. Netherlands it's time to lockdown now! Don't wait and watch

Misleading title. I live in Netherlands, What we have is an intelligent lockdown. We have more freedom, but are expected to use it wisely. If we ignore the rules set during the pandemic, we can get fined up to 4,000 euro. In essence we are instructed to stay home as much as possible, social distancing, no more than 2 people close together etc etc. But we are free to choose our moment to go out and do our necessary things without the police constantly checking people. In other words, the Government trusts it knows it's people well enough that in the end, enough people will abide the new rules that the spread can be curbed. To be honest in my opinion, with no way of knowing when a vaccine will be widely available, until then the goal of group immunity is the only way to beat a virus with the least deaths, how unintuitive that might seem. With a lockdown (and provided enough people stay at home) one could beat the virus but that leaves many people still vulnerable and as long as there's no vaccine the chance of a second outbreak is quite high. It only takes ONE infected person to reboot the whole catastrophe.

@Vice news, this video and title is totally misleading. The Netherlands are in a lockdown for the most part. Please stop misleading people!

  • Pieter107

This video is very misleading. The Dutch policy is mostly driven by two factors: science and intensive care capacity. The PM and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment set out the policy and whilst doing this closely check whether there is enough intensive care capacity. Currently, the total capacity amounts to 2400 IC beds of which currently 1324 beds are taken. At this moment the number of people taken to intensive care is becoming less. Apart from that, the fact remains that the Netherlands is mostly in lockdown. People are staying at home. Cafe's, bars and restaurants are closed. If people go outside to hang out together they get a fine. Nursing houses are closed. Nobody can go in and nobody can go out. Whether intelligent lockdown will work in the end? I have no clue. I am not a virologist or anything related. I just listen to Jaap van Distel, the head of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment and a professor. But let's not jump to conclusions. We can only determine whether the English, Swedish, Italian, American, South Korean or Dutch strategy has worked or not after the virus has been eradicated entirely.

  • krismeful

This is what Norway is doing. They have left it up to the individual stores if they want to close or not and some stores are limiting the amount of people they let in. All types of medical care like physical therapy, dental, and psychiatric are closed and most doctors are doing video consultations. They encourage social distancing and if the police see people in groups larger than 5, they will ask them to separate, but honestly, you could walk down the street and not know anything was going on unless you really paid attention.
